      Hokkaido’s roads call for
      professional driving.

Beautiful scenery is only part of the journey. Wildlife and changing winter conditions are good reasons to leave the road to a professional.

      • A sika deer crossing a Hokkaido road, with a minivan waiting at a distance

        Wildlife can appear without warning.

Deer and other wild animals may enter rural roads unexpectedly. Staying alert and responding carefully are essential.

      • A snow-covered rural road between frosted trees in Hokkaido

        Snowy roads take experience.

Snow and ice can reduce grip, while winter weather can limit visibility. These conditions call for experience and careful judgement.

New Chitose Airport (CTS) is also known as Shin Chitose Airport. Model courses are suggestions, not fixed schedules. Routes and stops depend on your flight times, season, opening hours and road conditions. We’ll help keep the journey realistic and comfortable.

        Winter routes, built around daylight

Choose a realistic route, then check current openings, event dates and road conditions. These are examples, not fixed timetables.

        Asahiyama Zoo + Biei

Start early from Sapporo. Make the zoo the priority and add a Biei stop only when daylight and roads allow. The penguin walk depends on snow and the zoo’s announcement; it is not guaranteed.

        Lake Shikotsu Ice Festival

A Lake Shikotsu day during the festival’s operating dates. Match pickup to admission and illumination hours, with extra time for winter roads.

        Otaru + Yoichi

Canal-town sightseeing and a Yoichi visit. Book any guided Nikka distillery tour separately and check winter closures and opening days.

        Lake Toya + Noboribetsu

Combine a lake viewpoint with a selective hot-spring-town stop. Keep outdoor walks short in icy weather and discuss a one-way hotel drop-off.

        Questions before you book

What is included in the price?

Your vehicle, driver, fuel, expressway tolls and parking for the agreed route. Admission tickets, meals and your accommodation are separate.

Do I need to pay in advance?

No advance payment is required for the vehicle service. Pay your driver in JPY on the day, by cash or card. Only agreed driver accommodation for overnight trips is paid by card when booking.

Are your vehicles and drivers licensed and insured?

Our journeys use licensed commercial passenger vehicles with green number plates, professional drivers holding Japan’s Class 2 driving licence, and passenger liability insurance. Ask us for the operating-company details if you would like to check them.

        Does the driver speak English?

Drivers use everyday conversational English and translation apps. Our dedicated English-speaking team handles planning and support before and after travel. A fluent tour guide is not automatically included.

        Will all our luggage fit?

An Alphard usually suits 4 guests and around 4 large suitcases with the third row folded; up to 6 guests requires lighter luggage. A suitable HiAce can carry 6–9 guests with large bags. Send the number and size of bags, stroller and ski equipment so we can confirm the layout.

        Can you provide child seats?

Yes, from rear-facing infant seats to booster seats. Send every child’s age, height and weight so the appropriate seat can be arranged before travel.

Can we start later in the morning?

Yes. Tell us your preferred pickup time. In midwinter, daylight can end around 4 pm, so an earlier start is often better for scenery; the exact sunset depends on the place and date.

Is it safe to drive in winter?

Our winter vehicles use studless winter tyres and drivers experienced in winter conditions. Snow, ice, visibility or pass closures may require a different route or fewer stops. Safety comes before keeping the original timetable.

What if the day runs longer?

Day-tour time is counted from pickup. Overtime is ¥5,000 per additional 30 minutes, beyond the agreed service period. We will discuss changes to the route or hours with you.

Can you do a one-way trip with sightseeing on the way?

Yes. Examples include Sapporo → Furano and Jozankei → Lake Toya, with agreed sightseeing stops and a different drop-off hotel. Send the full route for a quote.

        Do you arrange hotels?

We specialise in vehicles and drivers. Please book your own accommodation; we can suggest practical overnight towns and help check the driving route.

        Can you recommend restaurants?

Yes. We can suggest local restaurants and our driver can check opening days in advance. Tell us dietary needs and whether you want help with a reservation. Meals and any reservation arrangements are confirmed separately.

        What is your cancellation policy?

Cancellation is free until 8 days before travel. Fees apply from 7 days before; the full fee schedule is provided with your booking conditions before you confirm.

        Which areas do you cover?

Sapporo, Otaru, Niseko, Furano–Biei, Asahikawa, Lake Toya, Noboribetsu, Lake Shikotsu and eastern Hokkaido including Shiretoko, Akan and Mashu. Hakodate pickup or drop-off is by consultation because vehicle positioning and driver accommodation may be needed.

        When is the best season?

Summer brings flower fields and long daylight; autumn colour varies by area and elevation. In eastern Hokkaido it is often past its best by late October. Winter offers snow scenery and seasonal events, while drift ice depends on place, date and conditions. Check each year’s opening and event information.

JICA training programme participants beside vehicles during a study visit

Thoughtful support for our study visit

We used HokkaVia for a study visit with six water administration officials from Africa as part of a JICA training programme. The team accommodated even small changes to our itinerary and showed thoughtful attention to detail throughout. Their support made the study tour both comfortable and valuable. The trainees from Africa were delighted as well. Thank you very much.

Two travellers enjoying a meal in Hokkaido

A very comfortable start to our Niseko holiday

We booked a transfer from New Chitose Airport to Niseko. After the flight, settling into a spacious, luxurious vehicle was exactly what we needed. Our driver gave us some helpful pointers about the area and recommended a restaurant to try during our stay. We went there a couple of nights later and had a fantastic meal. We'd booked the journey for convenience, but those little suggestions made it feel like the holiday had already started.

Otaru Canal under a blue sky

          A relaxed day in Otaru

We used HokkaVia for a day in Otaru and really enjoyed the relaxed pace. Our driver shared little details about the town as we approached and suggested where we could take a pleasant walk. For lunch, we asked for somewhere serving local seafood rather than choosing from photos online. His recommendation was excellent. Returning to such a comfortable car after walking around was a pleasure, especially for my mother. A very enjoyable day together.

Colorful flower fields in Furano, Hokkaido

          A great introduction to Hokkaido

This was our first visit to Hokkaido, and we wanted some help exploring beyond Sapporo. Our driver gave us useful background on the places we visited without overwhelming us with information. He was also happy to answer our many questions. The vehicle was spacious and exceptionally comfortable, which we appreciated on the longer stretches. His lunch recommendation was a small local spot we wouldn't have found ourselves. That combination of comfort and local knowledge really added to the experience.

Otaru Canal waterfront on a family day in Hokkaido

Such a comfortable way to travel with our parents

We booked HokkaVia for a family trip with our parents, and the comfortable vehicle made a real difference. The interior felt luxurious, and everyone had space to relax between stops. Our driver also explained things about the places we passed, which made the journey more interesting. The highlight was a small seafood restaurant he recommended for lunch. We probably would have walked straight past it on our own, but it became one of our favourite meals of the trip.

Colorful flower fields at Shikisai-no-oka in Biei under a blue sky

Plenty of time to enjoy the scenery

Our group wanted a day with beautiful views, good food and time for photographs. We discussed our plans with the driver, and he helped us work out which stops would fit comfortably. His local knowledge added a lot to the journey, especially when he pointed out things we hadn't noticed. Between stops, the spacious seats made it easy to relax. We enjoyed the balance of having our own plans and someone knowledgeable to help us along the way.

Wooded grounds at Hokkaido Shrine in Sapporo

The personal touches made it special

What I remember most is how much we learned through casual conversations with our driver. We asked about local food and places to explore, and his suggestions gave us ideas for the rest of our stay. The restaurant he recommended was excellent, too. Having such a comfortable car was a big plus after a full day of walking, but the experience felt special because of the personal attention. We came away with more than just photos of the usual sights.

Panoramic view of Otaru from Mount Tengu

The food recommendation was a highlight

We had already researched most of the attractions, but choosing where to eat was another matter. We told our driver what we felt like having, and he suggested a local restaurant that turned out to be one of our best meals in Hokkaido. Throughout the journey, he also explained the areas we passed and answered our questions. The premium vehicle was a treat, but it was the useful, personal recommendations that made the service stand out.

Blue Pond in Biei on a clear day

Good company and a lovely day out

We aren't usually keen on tightly scheduled tours, so a private charter suited us well. Our driver was friendly and informative, with a good sense of when to chat and when to let us enjoy the scenery. He suggested a lunch stop and a nearby place for photos that fitted neatly into our plans. The car was beautifully comfortable. We finished the day feeling we'd actually spent time in the places we visited, rather than just ticked them off.

Jigokudani valley in Noboribetsu surrounded by autumn trees

More memorable than a standard sightseeing trip

The scenery was beautiful, but the conversations with our driver were what made this day memorable. He explained what we were seeing along the route and pointed out details we would otherwise have missed. We also tried a restaurant he suggested, which turned out to be a highlight. The vehicle had a lovely, premium feel without making the experience feel formal. We could settle in, ask questions and enjoy the day at our own pace.

Shiroi Koibito Park in Sapporo on a sunny day

Worth it for a family travelling together

Travelling with children involves enough planning, so having our transportation arranged made the day much easier. We had a comfortable vehicle, a clear meeting point and a driver who helped us work out a realistic schedule. He shared interesting stories along the way and suggested a lunch stop that worked well for our family. We especially appreciated having time to enjoy each place instead of trying to squeeze in everything on our original list.

The local recommendations made the day

We had a few places in mind for our day outside Sapporo but hadn't planned every stop. Our driver helped us put them in a sensible order and suggested a lovely place for a break along the way. The car was quiet and very comfortable, but what we appreciated most was being able to ask questions about local food and everyday life in Hokkaido. It felt much more personal than simply getting a transfer from one attraction to another.

A lovely way to explore on our first visit

It was our first time in Hokkaido, and we were glad to have someone familiar with the area taking us around. Our driver explained the places we visited in an approachable way and helped us decide where to spend more time. The car was luxurious, clean and very comfortable. We especially enjoyed the restaurant he recommended for lunch. It made a difference to have a suggestion based on what we wanted to eat, rather than another long list of options.
