Choose the vehicle around people and luggage together

For Sapporo pickup and return, April–November day-charter starting rates are ¥50,000 for an Alphard and ¥60,000 for a HiAce, for up to 10 hours. Route and winter rates differ. Choose the car around all passengers, child seats and luggage; meals, admissions and any applicable extras are separate.

Hokkaido car rental with driver: what you are booking

Looking for a Hokkaido car rental with driver usually means you want a private vehicle, a local driver and a day planned around your group. With HokkaVia, you book a private car charter: the driver handles the road, while your party has the vehicle to itself for the agreed route and hours. You are not collecting a rental car and adding a driver separately.

We arrange Alphard and HiAce vehicles for Sapporo sightseeing, Otaru day trips, Furano–Biei journeys, airport transfers and multi-day travel. Tell us who is travelling, the bags you will carry and where you want to go. We recommend a vehicle and a realistic itinerary, then confirm the total and inclusions in writing.

The best vehicle is the one that fits people and luggage together. Six advertised passenger seats do not mean six large suitcases fit behind them. A smaller party may enjoy an Alphard; a family with several cases, a stroller or ski bags may need a HiAce even when there are spare passenger seats.

Need the wider booking process? See our Hokkaido private driver guide. If you are deciding whether to drive yourself, use the separate self-drive versus private driver comparison.

Book the right service: transfer, day charter or multi-day driver

The phrase “car rental with driver” can cover several different journeys. Choose the service around where your day begins and ends, then choose the vehicle. This avoids paying for sightseeing time when all you need is a direct airport journey, or requesting a transfer that does not allow time for the places you want to visit.

Our published Sapporo-return day rates cannot automatically be applied to a hotel change or an airport pickup with sightseeing. Send the actual plan, even if it is still a rough outline. We will confirm which service fits and what it includes.

For a direct journey, use the airport–Sapporo transfer form or airport–Niseko transfer form. Those forms accept both one-way and round-trip requests. For sightseeing, use the tour enquiry below.

Alphard: a comfortable choice for a smaller party

An Alphard works particularly well for couples, parents with children and smaller groups who value a comfortable cabin. Our fleet guide allows up to six guests, but the useful luggage arrangement changes when rear seats are occupied. For around four guests with about four large cases, folding the third row can create a more practical layout. This is a planning example, not a promise that every case size will fit.

For five or six guests, send a complete bag list before choosing the vehicle. A day out with bags left at your Sapporo hotel is very different from an airport pickup with everyone’s suitcases. Child seats also occupy passenger positions and can affect access to another row.

HiAce: more flexibility for larger groups and luggage

A HiAce is usually the stronger starting point for six to nine travellers, or fewer people carrying substantial luggage. Standard HiAce and Luxury HiAce layouts differ; the available vehicle and actual seating plan determine usable space. Ask us to confirm the configuration rather than treating the model name as a fixed luggage allowance.

Look beyond the seat count: a stroller, a folded wheelchair, rigid cases and long ski bags use space differently. We check the combination for your specific journey. Never plan to fill an aisle, block a door or carry an unsecured case simply to keep a smaller vehicle.

Folding a rear seat changes both passenger capacity and luggage space. This is one example configuration.

HiAce luggage space: share the dimensions of cases, strollers and long equipment before booking.

These are real vehicle photographs. The Alphard image shows a rear seat folded in one configuration. Assigned vehicles, seat layouts and luggage arrangements are confirmed with your quote.

How to check luggage capacity before you book

Send the number of adults and children separately, then list each type of bag. “Six pieces of luggage” can describe cabin-size bags or six rigid cases with very different requirements. Dimensions are more useful than an airline’s size label, especially for unusually large items.

    • Suitcases: number of large and cabin cases; approximate height, width and depth if possible.
    • Children: ages, heights and approximate weights for child-seat planning; stroller dimensions when folded.
    • Snow equipment: number and length of ski or snowboard bags, plus boots and ordinary cases.
    • Mobility equipment: whether a wheelchair folds, its folded dimensions and whether the guest can transfer into a standard vehicle seat.
    • Route changes: which days include bags because you are changing hotels or travelling to the airport.

A quick photograph of your luggage together can help us understand its shape. Avoid including passports, baggage labels or other personal details. We can then explain whether an Alphard remains practical or a HiAce provides the better arrangement.

Alphard or HiAce for your party: four luggage scenarios

These examples explain the decision process. They are not guaranteed capacities. The confirmed seating and luggage plan takes priority over a generic online recommendation.

Private car with driver prices: compare like for like

Our current day-tour starting prices are per vehicle in Japanese yen, with Sapporo pickup and return and up to ten hours from pickup. The table separates the travel season and route area, so you can compare an Alphard and HiAce on the same basis.

Sapporo pickup and return · up to 10 hours from pickup · per vehicle
    Route / areaVehicleApril–NovemberDecember–March

    Biei–Furano / Niseko / Lake Toya–NoboribetsuHiAceFrom ¥75,000From ¥85,000

Fuel, expressway tolls and parking are included for the agreed route. Meals, attraction admissions and your accommodation are separate. Overtime is ¥5,000 per 30 minutes. Multi-day trips are quoted day by day; driver accommodation starts from ¥15,000 per night depending on the area and availability. Route areas in the table are alternatives, not a promise to combine all of them in one day.

For example, an April–November Otaru day starts from ¥55,000 for an Alphard or ¥65,000 for a HiAce. The ¥10,000 vehicle difference should be weighed against the actual luggage fit and passenger arrangement. A lower price is not useful if the selected car cannot comfortably carry the party you described.

Two ways to understand the vehicle price

For an April–November Otaru day, a ¥55,000 Alphard starting rate divided between four confirmed passengers is ¥13,750 each before meals and admissions. A ¥65,000 HiAce starting rate divided between six is about ¥10,833 each. These calculations show how a vehicle total can be shared within your own party; we do not sell individual seats at those figures.

Now consider four people on two different days. On a hotel-based Otaru day they may have only day bags. On the day they leave Sapporo for a different hotel, the same four people may also carry four large cases and a stroller. The number of travellers has not changed, but the usable seating and luggage layout has. A written recommendation based on both journeys is more useful than a single “four-person car” label.

What should the written quotation say?

Check the travel date, vehicle category, number of passengers, declared bags, pickup and final drop-off, included hours and route. The total should state the treatment of tolls, parking, overtime and any overnight driver accommodation. Request written confirmation of child seats or a specific access requirement; a representative cabin photograph alone does not confirm those arrangements.

Check our current private tour prices and obtain a dated written quote. A headline price elsewhere may cover fewer hours or exclude road charges; compare the time allowance, pickup area, parking, tolls, overtime and driver accommodation together. Airport and one-way transfers use separate route quotations.

Match the vehicle to the route, not just the passenger count

    Sapporo and Otaru: hotel-based sightseeing

If your bags stay at a Sapporo hotel, the vehicle can be chosen around passengers, child seats and day bags. An Otaru outing might focus on the canal and Sakaimachi Street, with a lunch break and one additional stop if timing permits. Agree a practical pickup point and where the driver will meet you after walking through an area that the vehicle cannot enter.

Compare our Otaru day-trip planning guide for walking time and route choices. A private car does not remove the walking required at attractions; tell us about steps, shorter walking distances or a slower pace before the itinerary is settled.

Furano and Biei: fewer stops, more time at each

These longer journeys benefit from a realistic route and a comfortable cabin. Select your priorities—such as the Blue Pond and Shikisai-no-Oka in Biei—rather than collecting every famous name in a single day. Flower conditions change with the season, and a photograph cannot promise the same colours on your dates.

    Otaru Canal and historic warehouses
Otaru: plan the walking area, meeting point and lunch break together.
    Shirogane Blue Pond in Biei
Biei’s Blue Pond. Its appearance and water colour vary with the conditions.

On a day trip, luggage may stay at your Sapporo hotel. On a Sapporo–Furano hotel change, every case travels with you. That single change can alter the recommended vehicle even when the passenger count stays identical. See our Sapporo to Furano and Biei guide before choosing your stops.

Niseko and airport journeys: count every ski bag

For New Chitose Airport, Sapporo and Niseko transfers, confirm the flight, actual hotel address, suitcases and snow equipment. A “Niseko hotel” may be in a different resort area from the one you have in mind. Give the property’s exact name so we can quote the correct journey and plan the drop-off.

Use the dedicated New Chitose Airport to Niseko transfer, Sapporo to Niseko transfer and airport to Sapporo transfer pages for route-specific arrangements.

A private driver and a private guide are different services

Your driver looks after the vehicle, road and agreed pickup arrangements. HokkaVia provides English trip-planning support before travel; drivers use everyday English and translation apps as needed. This is different from a fluent English-speaking guide accompanying you inside every attraction.

If detailed cultural interpretation, restaurant translation or a particular guiding language is essential, request it before booking. We will confirm whether a separate guide is available and how that changes the quotation. Do not infer a guiding qualification or a guaranteed language level from the words “private tour.”

Our published fleet information describes commercially licensed vehicles with green plates, professional Class 2 drivers and passenger liability insurance. Ask us to confirm the actual vehicle and any special requirement in writing. A particular model year, entertainment system or seating feature should not be assumed from a representative photograph.

Children, older relatives and winter travel

A private vehicle is useful when your group needs to pause for meals, toilets or a rest. Plan those pauses into the day instead of using every available minute for another attraction. Let us know about child-seat needs, difficulty climbing steps or limited walking distances when requesting the quote.

Standard Alphard and HiAce vehicles should not be assumed to have a wheelchair lift or wheelchair tie-down system. Tell us whether a guest can transfer to a seat and describe the mobility equipment. We can check a workable arrangement before you commit.

For winter journeys, vehicles use winter tyres and drivers have local winter-driving experience. Snow, visibility and road closures can still affect the route and arrival time. Leave room in the schedule, particularly before flights, and be ready to shorten sightseeing if conditions require it. Our Hokkaido winter travel guide explains the planning considerations.

Flower fields at Shikisai-no-Oka in Biei
Shikisai-no-Oka is in Biei. Plan for the flower season and opening arrangements on your dates.

Shikisai-no-Oka is in Biei. Flowers and outdoor activities vary with the season; your route should reflect what is operating on your travel dates.

From the first enquiry to the pickup

Start with the journey, rather than a finished itinerary

Tell us your travel dates and the first and last addresses. Add the places that matter most, who is travelling and whether bags will be on board. If you have not chosen every hotel, name the intended overnight towns and explain what is still undecided. We can discuss a practical route before you commit to a vehicle.

Confirm passenger space and luggage together

Describe adults, children and child seats as separate planning details. List case quantities and approximate dimensions, plus the folded stroller or wheelchair and the length of ski bags. Ask which seating arrangement is proposed and how everyone will board. If the combination does not fit, agree another arrangement before booking rather than relying on unused seats to hold bags.

Agree pickup instructions and the day’s limits

For a hotel, use its full name and entrance details, especially when an apartment has a separate key-collection location. For an airport, provide the flight number and Japan arrival date. Confirm the meeting method and the terms for delays or waiting. A flight landing time is not the same as the time you will be ready to leave the terminal.

Keep the confirmed plan available during travel

Save the quotation, contact details and meeting instructions where you can read them on arrival. Tell us promptly if a hotel, flight or passenger count changes. A new destination, longer stop or different luggage load can affect the vehicle and price. Request the change before assuming it is covered by the original arrangement.

What to send for a clear vehicle and driver quote

    1. Dates and route. Include pickup and final drop-off addresses, hotel changes and the places you most want to visit.
    2. Everyone travelling. Give the adult and child counts, child-seat details and any access needs.
    3. The full bag list. Include luggage sizes, stroller, folded wheelchair and snow equipment.
    4. Your priorities. Tell us whether cabin comfort, fewer steps, photography time or fitting all bags is most important.
    5. Confirmation before booking. Check the allocated vehicle type, hours, total price, inclusions, overtime and cancellation terms.

For the current published day-tour arrangement, vehicle payment is made to the driver in Japanese yen, by cash or card on the day. Driver accommodation on applicable multi-day routes is an exception and is paid by card when booking. Free cancellation is available until eight days before; charges apply from seven days before. Check the precise schedule in your written quotation, especially if your plans may change.

An enquiry is not a booking. We use your information to recommend a route and vehicle, then confirm the details with you. Send your group and luggage details for a quote.

Hokkaido car rental with driver: frequently asked questions

How much is a Hokkaido car rental with driver?

For Sapporo pickup and return, April–November day-charter starting prices are ¥50,000 for an Alphard and ¥60,000 for a HiAce, with up to 10 hours from pickup. Other route areas and winter dates have different rates. This books a vehicle and driver together; meals and admissions are separate. Confirm the total for your itinerary.

Can six people and six large cases fit in an Alphard?

Do not assume they can. Using passenger seats reduces luggage space. Send the number and dimensions of your cases; a HiAce may be more practical for that combination.

Is a HiAce always the better choice for a family?

No. A smaller family with modest luggage may prefer an Alphard. A larger family or one with a stroller and several large cases may need a HiAce. We assess the actual seating and luggage layout.

Are child seats and ski bags included in the vehicle check?

They should be declared in advance. Give children’s ages, heights and weights, plus equipment quantities and bag lengths. Availability and the final layout are confirmed with your quotation.

Does the price include tolls and parking?

Our published day-tour prices include fuel, expressway tolls and parking for the agreed route. Meals, admission fees and guest accommodation are separate. Overtime and applicable driver accommodation are additional.

Will the driver provide a guided tour in English?

English planning support is available, while drivers use everyday English and translation tools as needed. A fluent guide is a separate requirement that must be requested and confirmed before booking.

Can the car take us between hotels on a multi-day trip?

Yes, subject to a confirmed route and availability. Include every hotel, all bags and your desired stops. We quote each day and confirm any driver accommodation charge.

Can I request an accessible vehicle?

Describe the guest’s transfer ability, steps they can manage and mobility equipment dimensions. Do not assume a standard vehicle has a wheelchair lift. We check the arrangement before confirming.
